Thomson Delmar Learning Launches First Ever Online EMT Training

With advanced testing and assessment features, this course provides EMT-Basic professionals a convenient Internet-based learning system to assess and enhance their current skills and offers refresher training required for re-certification. It covers 24 hours of training, which EMTs can use for state-approved hours for online training toward re-certification and continuing education credit.

This course provides busy EMTs with a highly effective and cost-efficient option to traditional in-class training. The online approach allows those EMTs who might not have access to training--such as those staffing rural emergency management systems--to keep their skills honed and up to date. The Thomson Delmar Learning course also helps cash-strapped departments provide the ongoing education their staffers need without paying overtime. In addition, the administrative management tools provide data collection and allow training coordinators to manage the group training at various levels by department, city or state.

The online course was previewed at the National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) Conference in Nashville and at EMS Expo in Las Vegas in October. The content for the course was compiled by Jim Miller, EMS Programs Manager from the U.S. Army and is based upon Thomson Delmar Learning's EMT-Basic core textbook, Fundamentals of Emergency Care by Richard Beebe and Deborah Funk. The course's seven content modules review the required refresher material, which corresponds directly to the United States Department of Transportation National Standard EMT-Basic refresher curriculum and provides progress tools for administrative management. The modules cover detailed information for EMTs on preparatory, airway, assessment, medical/behavioral, trauma, obstetrics/infants/children, and operations issues and trends. The course is currently in review for accreditation by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for EMS (CECBEMS).
