»  Blood type linked to stroke risks, says report delivered at AHA meeting
In the study, which followed 90,000 men and women for more than 25 years, 43 percent of participants had type O blood, 36 percent had type A, 13 percent had B, and 8 percent had AB. That breakdown closely matches the U.S. population, said Qi.

Defibrillator 'upgrade' apparently a dud
But today the costly equipment switchover increasingly seems to have been a mistake. The latest, most extensive research suggests that the new gear, now found in nearly all U.S. hospitals, saves fewer lives than the old, lower-tech defibrillators. Nov 16, 2011, 02:20

»  Bedside test finds awareness in vegetative brains
In recent years, scientists have learned that some patients believed to be in a vegetative state actually have some awareness and that they might be able to communicate. Now, a new study suggests a portable brain monitor can detect signs of this, perhaps making it possible someday for doctors to easily double-check the diagnosis at the bedside.

»  Interventions Fail to Improve Cardiac Arrest Outcomes
One of the studies compared CPR lasting no more than one minute with three minutes of CPR before performing rhythm analysis. The other was a sham-controlled trial of a so-called impedance threshold device (ITD) that increases negative intrathoracic pressure during the decompression phases of CPR.

»  NHLBI Stops Enrollment in Study on Resuscitation Methods for Cardiac Arrest
Enrollment has ended early in a large, multicenter clinical trial comparing two distinct resuscitation strategies delivered by emergency medical service (EMS) providers to increase blood flow during cardiac arrest. The study's independent monitoring board and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the lead sponsor of the study, stopped enrollment based on preliminary data suggesting that neither strategy significantly improved survival.
