Sumner County EMS in Tennessee is believed to be the first in the state to use handheld computers to manage patient information. And while they’ve been using them for more than a year, a new requirement from the state made their software obsolete.

Rather than paying for a new program or going back to paper reports, Sumner County decided to create its own software, called Mobile Medic

Mobile Medic was created by a paramedic and an EMT. They said it took hundreds of hours and is worth thousands of dollars, but that they're offering it to other counties for free.

“We built it and said, ‘here it is and any county that wants to use it, that's great,’” said Mike Cook of Sumner County EMS.

Cook also said the program could be particularly helpful to rural counties that wouldn't be able to afford the software.

If a county buys the handheld computers, Sumner County EMS officials said they will provide the software, training and support, all at no charge.

Two counties and an Air Force base have already expressed interest in the new computers.
