EMS House of DeFrance http://www.emshouse.com Keepin' Up in EMS Courtesy the EMS House of DeFrance http://www.defrance.org The Medical College of Wisconsin has received funding from the National Institutes of Health to determine if two treatments used by emergency medical service workers on patients in cardiac arrest increase their chance of survival. The first treatment uses a small hard plastic tool, called an impedance threshold device, which is attached to the face mask or airway tube used during CPR to help increase blood flow back to the heart during chest compressions. The second treatment involves the amount of cardiopulmonary resuscitation given before the EMS providers first analyze the heart rhythm to determine if a shock is needed. The school is one of 11 sites to receive the five-year grant, totaling $30 million. The
