We responded to a rehab hospital for a respiratory arrest. We arrived to find the patient surrounded by seven or eight nurses etc. CPR was in progress. The patient was being ventilated with a BVM and he was hooked up to a monitor.

I asked what the pts name was and was informed it was Howard.

I said "Howard, how are you doing?" He replied "mmphmff!!!"

I then told the harried staff they could stop what they were doing.

It turned out Howard, who was in rehab for a knee replacement had felt dizzy. He profusely thanked me saying I was the only person in the room who knew what was going on.
He had told his wife three days earlier to get him out of the place because, in his words, "they were going to kill him."
