Northfield fire station officer, Martyn Price said Mr Sanders was "lucky" as his head could have been crushed. "He was just leaning over through the frame, cutting a pipe at the back of the toilet when his leg accidentally touched the up switch," he told the BBC's News Online service.
"It just ascended and trapped him around the neck. "
Mr Sanders was taken to Selly Oak hospital by ambulance, with a suspected broken neck.
"He was in a state of shock and could hardly breath as he was an asthmatic as well; he was very, very pleased to see us." Martyn added "Although this was a freak accident, anyone working with electrical equipment should isolate it first"
